Teen Patti rules & hand rankings

Teen Patti (also called Teen Paati or Flash) is India’s favourite three-card game at Diwali parties and weekend card nights. Here is everything a beginner needs: the hand rankings, how a round works, and the most popular variations.

Hand rankings, best to worst

  1. #1

    Trail (Trio / Set)

    A♠A♥A♦

Three cards of the same rank.

Three Aces is the best hand in the game. Three 2s is the lowest Trail.

  2. #2

    Pure Sequence (Straight Flush)

    A♥K♥Q♥

Three cards in a row, all of the same suit.

A-K-Q is the highest. In most groups A-2-3 comes next, then K-Q-J, down to 2-3-4.

  3. #3

    Sequence (Run)

    6♣5♥4♠

Three cards in a row, in mixed suits.

Ranked the same way as a Pure Sequence: A-K-Q at the top.

  4. #4

    Color (Flush)

    K♦9♦4♦

Three cards of the same suit that are not in a row.

Compare the highest card first, then the next, then the last.

  5. #5

    Pair (Double)

    Q♣Q♥7♠

Two cards of the same rank.

The higher pair wins. If both pairs match, the third card decides.

  6. #6

    High Card

    A♠10♦6♣

    None of the above.

Compare the highest card, then the next, then the last.

A standard 52-card deck is used with no jokers (unless you play a joker variation). Aces are high, except in an A-2-3 sequence.

How to play, in five steps

  1. 1

Boot. Everyone puts the boot, a small fixed amount of chips, into the pot. Each player gets 3 cards face down.

  2. 2

Blind or Seen. A blind player plays without looking at their cards. Once you look, you are “seen”, and you must put in twice as much as a blind player on each turn.

  3. 3

Chaal or pack. On your turn, either play chaal (add chips to the pot to stay in) or pack (fold and drop out of the round).

  4. 4

Side show. A seen player can ask the seen player before them to compare cards privately. The weaker hand packs. The other player can refuse.

  5. 5

Show. When only two players are left, either can ask for a show. Both hands are revealed and the higher hand takes the pot.

Popular variations

Standard rules and hand rankings, exactly as above.

Classic
Standard rules and hand rankings, exactly as above.
Muflis (Lowball)
The rankings flip: the lowest hand wins the show. A high card of 5-3-2 in mixed suits is the best possible hand.
AK47
Every Ace, King, 4 and 7 is a joker (wild card) and can stand in for any card.
Joker
One card is turned face up from the deck. Every card of that rank becomes a joker for the round.
Lowest Joker
Each player’s own lowest card is their joker.
Highest Joker
Each player’s own highest card is their joker.
999
Arrange your 3 cards as a 3-digit number. The closest to 999 wins. 10s and face cards count as 0.
Four Card
Everyone gets 4 cards and plays the best 3 of them.

House rules vary. For example, some groups rank A-2-3 above K-Q-J and some don’t. Agree before you start.
